How to refill an ink cartridge with an ink refill kit
There are several ways to replace empty inkjet cartridges. The easiest way is to replace the entire ink cartridge with a brand new one purchased from the original manufacturer or from a retail outlet that sells a cheaper alternative. But buying new inkjet cartridges every time it runs out can easily become a big expense, particularly if it is used within companies that use printers and copiers often and in mass quantity.
One of the cheaper, lower-cost alternatives to replacing inkjet cartridges is to buy an ink refill kit. Not all inkjet cartridges come with the ability to refill the ink manually, so be sure to verify the product before purchasing one. Some retailers will have a professional on staff to refill the ink cartridge on site.
An ink refill kit typically comes with a set of tools and bottles of ink, depending on whether one is refilling a black ink cartridge or a color ink cartridge. A combined color ink cartridge will come with three different ink bottles: cyan, magenta and yellow. Some specialized printers will also sell each color separately. Some of the other tools that are included in an ink cartridge refill kit are a cartridge holder and needles. The cartridge holder is used to hold the ink cartridge while a needle is used to withdraw air bubbles from the cartridge.
In order to refill an ink cartridge, the ink must be injected through a hole on the top of the cartridge, or as with some brands, injected directly into the ink chambers under the top. Ink can be injected directly from the bottle or pumped through a needle. The injection must be done slowly to avoid damage or overflow into the other inkjet cartridges. Any air left in the cartridge must be withdrawn with the use of the needle. Sometimes, ink cartridge refill kits can come with more ink intended for multiple refills, so the best way is to slowly pour in the ink in small amounts to prevent not only overflow, but from wasting valuable ink.
Place the top back on the ink cartridge and back into the printer. Sometimes, extra ink may still flow out and the cartridge must be blotted for a few minutes before proper installation can begin. Then, run any printer cleaning utilities on the printer to eliminate any excess ink by having the ink cartridge blot onto paper.
The next step is to inspect the print-head. From time to time, the ink flow can get blocked by old, dried ink on the ink cartridge print-head. Color inkjet cartridges are particularly susceptible to this. Dried ink can be eliminated by using isopropyl alcohol (50% or higher) and a folded paper towel or cloth to rub gently over the print-head. If this doesn’t work, another method is to soak the cartridge overnight in a shallow cup of warm, clean water. In the morning, use the rubbing alcohol once more to eliminate the dry ink and if it appears clean, proceed with installing the ink cartridge and begin printing!
